A cousin wanted to know how we were related to a Kathleen Mabel Troke who was a former neighbour of hers. It wasn’t easy but I eventually discovered that our common ancestor was Henry Troke 1776 -1843. The block was the father of Henry Herbert Troke 1872 – 1939 whose mother’s maiden name was given as Cox when his birth was registered. Margaret Cox had married a Henry Troke but censuses give Henry Herbert’s parents names as Robert and Margaret. I found birth registration and census information for Robert Troke but no records for Henry prior to his marriage. It was only with the discovery of the granting of probate for a Henry Robert Troke in 1916 to his daughter Rose that I proved that Robert and Henry were the same person. Henry’s birth was registered under the name Robert and he was called Robert throughout his life except for when he married and when his death was registered.
Although they are only distant relations I have documented my findings here in the hope that the information may be helpful to other researchers in the future.
